Which olympiads can you register for without the school?

Most olympiad bodies do not deal with parents at all. The school registers the class, the school picks the exam date, and a family’s only real lever is asking the coordinator early enough to matter.

That is genuinely how SOF and SilverZone work: there is no consumer sign-up route for either. If your child’s school does not run olympiads — and many schools run none, or run only one — those two doors are closed, and no amount of persistence opens them.

Four bodies do take a registration directly from a family. They are not widely advertised as consumer products, they run on their own calendars, and three of the four have no registration cutoff at all — which functionally means open right now. Only one, Indian Talent Olympiad’s individual route, has a real published deadline.

Can a parent register a child for an olympiad without going through the school?

Yes, for four bodies: CREST Olympiads, Indian Talent Olympiad’s individual online route, Unified Council’s NSTSE (and its online Maths and English papers), and Humming Bird. SOF and SilverZone register through the school only, with no consumer sign-up route at all. EduHeal’s registration mechanics are not yet confirmed either way — its site does not currently publish enough to verify.

There is a catch worth understanding before you start, and it is the same for all four: a child registered directly does not sit the paper with their class. The direct routes run on their own exam dates, usually later than the school ones. For a child whose school runs no olympiad at all, that costs nothing. For a family trying to get a second attempt alongside a school paper, it changes what the day looks like.

How does CREST registration work, and what does it cost?

CREST registers individual students online, with no school involved, and publishes no registration cutoff — so registration is open now.

CREST’s Level 1 papers relevant to Classes 6 to 8 sit in December 2026, each with two slots to pick from:

• CMO (Maths) — 10 December or 19 December 2026
• CSO (Science) — 3 December or 12 December 2026
• CEO (English) — 1 December or 5 December 2026

Each subject also has a practice test earlier in the season, and a Level 2 in late January to early February 2027 for students who qualify at Level 1.

Two things to know before you treat “qualified for Level 2” as a headline. First, CREST’s Level 2 calls back the top 55.56% of Level 1 candidates — a genuinely different bar from SOF’s top 5%, and the two are not comparable even though both are called “Level 2”. Second, CREST does not run papers in Hindi or Social Science, so a family wanting all five subjects will not get them here.

Can you register for Indian Talent Olympiad without a school?

Yes — Indian Talent Olympiad runs an individual online route alongside its school route, and in the body’s own words, “students participating individually need to follow the online exam dates of slot-1 and slot-2.”

Its individual online route runs six papers — ICO, NSSO, GKIO, EIO, ISO and IMO — which inside our five subjects means Maths, Science, English and Social Studies (the body calls its social-science paper the National Social Studies Olympiad). It does not run Hindi here. Indian Talent Olympiad does have a Hindi paper, NHO, but it sits on the school route only, so a Hindi family cannot take this body without the school.

That makes it one of the two widest direct routes rather than the widest: Humming Bird also covers four of our five subjects, and not the same four — it runs Hindi and no social-science paper at all. If your child needs both subjects without the school, you need both bodies.

The dates that matter:

• Slot 1 — registration closes 30 October 2026, exams from 1 December 2026.
• Slot 2 — exams from 4 January 2027.
• Once a slot is selected it cannot be changed.

Do not confuse this with the 31 August deadline you may have seen from the same body. Indian Talent Olympiad’s Set A cutoff of 31 August 2026 belongs to its school route — the one where your child sits the paper with the class in October. The individual online route above is a separate calendar that closes two months later. Both are real; they are not two versions of the same thing, and a family can miss the one they actually need by acting on the other.

Is NSTSE open to individual students, and is it more expensive?

Yes — Unified Council runs NSTSE student-wise as well as school-wise, and yes, going direct costs more: ₹350 registering as an individual student, against ₹150 through a school.

The online NSTSE for direct candidates is on 24 January 2027. Unified Council’s other two papers inside our subject set also have online dates for direct students: UIMO (Maths) on 10 January 2027 and UIEO (English) on 3 January 2027.

Unified Council does not publish a registration cutoff for any of them. The prospectus goes to schools directly, which is why the honest instruction here is to register early rather than to plan around a date nobody has published.

Can you register for Humming Bird olympiads without a school?

Yes — Humming Bird takes individual registrations directly from families, online, and it is the only direct route on this page with a stated fee below CREST’s: ₹150 a subject (₹600 international). The body’s own individual-registration form and FAQ both confirm it: “Students can register individually through the website or via their school.”

Relevant to Classes 6 to 8, four papers inside our subject set — and two of them are the reason this body matters more than its fee suggests. Each offers a choice of two dates, picked at the point of paying, not assigned:

• HMO (Maths), Class 6 — 18 November or 2 December 2026
• HSO (Science), Class 6 — 19 November or 3 December 2026
• HEO (English), Class 6 — 23 November or 7 December 2026
• HHO (Hindi), Class 6 — 28 November or 11 December 2026 — the only Hindi paper on this page a family can register for without the school

Two things this route does not give you, stated because most others on this page do: no published registration cutoff (the dates above are exam dates, not a deadline to register by), and no published marking scheme — no total marks, no marks per question, no negative-marking rule. A number filled in here would be a guess dressed as a fact, so it stays blank rather than invented.

Which deadline actually applies to my child?

It depends entirely on which route they are on, and this is where most families lose a paper.

• Through the school, SOF: registration must reach SOF exactly 30 days before the date the school selects, and once the school has chosen, the date cannot be changed. There is no late window. This rule is SOF’s own and applies to SOF only.
• Through the school, Indian Talent Olympiad: fixed published cutoffs — Set A 31 August 2026, Set B 10 October 2026, Set C 10 November 2026.
• Through the school, SilverZone: 31 August 2026 — one cutoff covering every paper it runs. SilverZone publishes this on a schedule it heads “tentative”, so confirm it with your coordinator — but confirm it before the date. It is easy to miss, because the exams themselves are in October, November and December: a parent working backwards from the exam date will be two to three months late.
• Direct, CREST: no published cutoff, open now.
• Direct, Indian Talent Olympiad: slot 1 closes 30 October 2026.
• Direct, Unified Council: no published cutoff.
• Direct, Humming Bird: no published cutoff — HMO/HSO exam dates in November–December 2026, ₹150 a subject.

If your child is going through school, the single most useful thing you can do this week is send one message to the coordinator: which papers is our class writing, and which dates have you picked? Both halves matter. The second one is what sets your deadline.

What if the school runs no olympiads at all?

Then the four direct routes above are the whole answer — and the first thing to know is that no single one of them covers all five subjects. The two widest cover four each, and they are not the same four: Indian Talent Olympiad is the only direct route with Social Science, and Humming Bird is the only one with Hindi. A family needing both papers without the school needs both bodies. The practical order:

• CREST — open now, no cutoff to race, December papers. The lowest-friction start.
• Indian Talent Olympiad, individual online — the only direct route that runs a Social Science paper (NSSO). Slot 1 closes 30 October, so it is also the one with a real clock on it. It does not run Hindi: its individual online route lists six papers and NHO is not among them, so a Hindi family cannot take ITO without the school.
• Humming Bird — open now (no published cutoff), the cheapest at ₹150 a subject, and the only direct route that runs Hindi (HHO, Classes 1 to 12). Maths, Science, English and Hindi; no Social Science.
• Unified Council — NSTSE and the online Maths and English papers, January 2027, ₹350 direct.

None of these need the school’s permission, a recommendation, or a minimum number of students.

Preparing once, for whichever paper your child sits

The registration route changes the date and the fee. It does not change what is on the paper: these are all school-syllabus exams asked in an olympiad shape, and a child who is genuinely fluent in the current NCERT chapters plus the question patterns is prepared for any of them.
